In November 2007, Stryker Corporation and its former outpatient therapy division, Physiotherapy Associates Inc., agreed to pay the United States $16.6 million to resolve allegations that false claims were submitted to Medicare and other federal health-care programs. The Justice Department alleged that Physiotherapy billed services as one-on-one treatment when they were not provided on that basis and improperly retained excess or duplicate payments from Medicare, state Medicaid programs and the Department of Defense's TRICARE program.
