In 2021, Broadcom Inc. settled Federal Trade Commission charges that it illegally monopolized markets for semiconductor components used in television and broadband internet equipment. The FTC alleged that Broadcom used exclusive-dealing and loyalty arrangements to prevent customers from purchasing key chips from competing suppliers and to maintain its monopoly power in several semiconductor markets. The FTC's final order prohibited Broadcom from entering certain exclusivity or loyalty agreements for covered chips and imposed restrictions intended to restore competition.
