Caixa Geral de Depósitos EUR 82 million banking cartel fine
The Portuguese Competition Authority found that Caixa Geral de Depósitos participated in a concerted practice involving the exchange of sensitive and confidential commercial information among competing banks between 2002 and 2013. The exchanged data covered mortgage, consumer and business lending, including future pricing information and recent lending volumes. The AdC imposed an EUR 82 million fine on Caixa Geral de Depósitos in September 2019, the largest individual fine in the banking case. Judicial proceedings continued through 2025, so the record is marked unresolved.
