Canadian National Railway Company pleaded guilty to a Fisheries Act offence and was fined $2.5 million on September 15, 2021. Environment and Climate Change Canada said CN sprayed pesticides along its rail corridor near waters frequented by fish between August 24 and August 28, 2017, contrary to the Act. Canadian National Railway pleaded guilty and paid over $2.6 million for diesel discharges
On June 15, 2017, Canadian National Railway Company pleaded guilty to federal and provincial environmental offences associated with diesel fuel entering the North Saskatchewan River near Edmonton. The federal penalty was $2.5 million and the provincial penalty was $125,000. Environment and Climate Change Canada traced diesel observed in April 2015 to CN's Bissell Yard.
