Clariant Fined €155.769 Million in EU Ethylene Purchasing Cartel

Summary

In July 2020, the European Commission fined Clariant AG and Clariant International AG €155.769 million for participation in an ethylene purchasing cartel. The Commission found that cartel participants exchanged sensitive commercial and pricing information and coordinated a price element used in negotiations with ethylene sellers. Clariant accepted liability in the settlement procedure. The fine included an increase for repeat infringement and reductions for leniency and settlement cooperation. In October 2023, the EU General Court dismissed Clariant's challenge to the fine.
