In September 2022, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced a settlement with Clean Harbors Wilmington LLC over alleged violations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act at its hazardous-waste treatment, storage and disposal facility in Wilmington, California. EPA said the claims involved improper monitoring and management of hazardous waste. Clean Harbors certified that the facility had addressed the alleged violations and agreed to pay a $99,500 civil penalty. In August 2020, Clean Harbors Environmental Services Inc. reached a settlement with the United States and Nebraska over alleged violations at its commercial hazardous-waste incinerator in Kimball, Nebraska. EPA said the alleged violations included failures to properly manage and contain hazardous wastes, comply with air-emission limits, meet chemical-accident prevention safety requirements and timely report the use of certain toxic chemicals. Clean Harbors agreed to pay a $790,000 civil penalty and improve facility practices intended to protect workers and the surrounding community from potentially harmful pollutant releases.
