Columbia Shipmanagement Ltd

The U.S. Department of Justice reported that Cyprus-based Columbia Shipmanagement Ltd and its German affiliate pleaded guilty on 21 March 2013 to Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships violations, obstruction and false statements involving four vessels. The firms admitted that required pollution-control equipment had been bypassed and oil record books falsified; illegal bilge discharges on one vessel dated back to at least 2010. On 23 July 2013 the companies were sentenced jointly to a $10.4 million criminal penalty, four years of probation and an independently monitored environmental compliance plan. The monetary amount was joint with the German co-defendant and is not attributed solely to the Cyprus company.
