Eastman Chemical Company

In September 1999, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced a $2.75 million settlement with Eastman Chemical Company concerning alleged Resource Conservation and Recovery Act violations at its Kingsport, Tennessee facility. EPA alleged that from December 1995 through August 1996 Eastman failed to accurately measure and monitor hazardous waste burned in seven steam boilers. EPA said the monitoring requirements were intended to ensure that hazardous waste was not burned above permitted maximum quantities and cited both the extended period of noncompliance and delayed notification. The administrative settlement required Eastman to pay a $2.75 million civil penalty.
