ExxonMobil Settled Clean Air Act Flare Violations and Agreed to About $300 Million in Pollution Controls
In October 2017, Exxon Mobil Corporation and ExxonMobil Oil Corporation reached a Clean Air Act settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Justice and Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality. Authorities alleged that ExxonMobil failed to properly operate and monitor industrial flares at eight petrochemical manufacturing facilities in Texas and Louisiana, resulting in excess emissions of harmful air pollutants. The settlement required ExxonMobil to spend approximately $300 million installing and operating pollution-control and monitoring technology covering 26 industrial flares. It also included a civil penalty and environmental projects intended to reduce pollution affecting nearby communities.
