FirstGroup subsidiary Greyhound settled U.S. allegations of nationwide disability discrimination
The U.S. Department of Justice filed a consent decree resolving allegations that Greyhound Lines repeatedly violated the Americans with Disabilities Act by failing to provide passengers with disabilities full and equal access to transportation services. The alleged failures included inaccessible or inadequately maintained equipment, failures to provide boarding and rest-stop assistance, and an inability for wheelchair users to complete reservations online. The settlement required systemic reforms, a $75,000 civil penalty, $300,000 for specifically identified passengers and compensation for additional eligible claimants without a predetermined overall cap. The Justice Department later reported that more than $3 million had been distributed to affected individuals. Greyhound was a FirstGroup subsidiary during the relevant period. This record attributes the resolved conduct to FirstGroup through its then-subsidiary and distinguishes the settlement from a trial judgment against the parent company.
