In March 2023, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced a settlement with Huntsman Advanced Materials LLC over alleged Clean Water Act permit violations at its Ashtabula, Ohio facility. EPA said pollutants including chlorine, mercury and E. coli were discharged into a tributary flowing to Fields Brook and the Ashtabula River. In June 2021 EPA issued an administrative order requiring wastewater-treatment upgrades and improved cleaning, maintenance and sampling procedures. The facility completed the required actions and returned to compliance in August 2022. Huntsman agreed to pay a $180,000 penalty for the past violations.
