Imperial Oil subsidiary pleaded guilty over a Kearl industrial-wastewater overflow
At a May 29, 2026 hearing, Imperial Oil Resources Limited, a subsidiary of Imperial Oil Limited, pleaded guilty to violating a condition of its Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act approval after an industrial-wastewater overflow at the Kearl oil-sands site. The Alberta Energy Regulator reported that the overflow occurred between January 28 and February 4, 2023 and that the court imposed a $120,000 penalty.
