Kia and Hyundai jointly settled U.S. vehicle emissions-certification allegations
The U.S. EPA named Kia Motors Corporation (now Kia Corporation) among defendants in a 2014 Clean Air Act consent-decree settlement involving overstated fuel economy and understated greenhouse-gas emissions in 2012–2013 model-year Kia and Hyundai cars. The two automakers together agreed to a $100 million civil penalty and emissions-credit forfeiture; $100 million was the combined amount, not Kia’s individual penalty. EPA described the violations as allegations resolved through settlement.
