In January 2017, Las Vegas Sands Corp. agreed to pay a $6.96 million criminal penalty to resolve a U.S. Department of Justice investigation into Foreign Corrupt Practices Act violations connected with business transactions in China and Macao. According to admissions made in the resolution, certain company executives knowingly and willfully failed to implement adequate internal accounting controls governing payments to a consultant and failed to prevent false recording of those payments in the company's books and records. The Justice Department said the consultant helped Sands promote its brand in Macao and mainland China.
