FTC Took Action Against Match and OkCupid Over Sharing User Data Contrary to Privacy Promises
In March 2026, the Federal Trade Commission announced an enforcement action against OkCupid and affiliate Match Group Americas concerning the sharing of users' personal information with an unrelated third party.
The FTC alleged that OkCupid gave the third party access to personal data belonging to millions of users, including photographs and location information, contrary to the service's privacy promises.
A stipulated settlement would prohibit misrepresentations about privacy practices and impose requirements concerning access to consumer information.

Match Group Agreed to Pay $14 Million Over Deceptive Advertising, Billing and Cancellation Practices
In August 2025, Match Group Inc. and Match Group LLC agreed to pay $14 million and accept restrictions on their business practices to resolve Federal Trade Commission charges concerning Match.com.
The FTC alleged that Match deceptively induced consumers to subscribe by promoting a free six-month guarantee without adequately disclosing onerous conditions, unfairly locked consumers out of accounts after unsuccessful billing disputes while retaining their money, and made subscription cancellation difficult.
The proposed order required Match to stop misrepresenting guarantees, simplify cancellation procedures and provide $14 million for consumer redress.
