Following serious environmental concerns at Hydro Alunorte in Barcarena, Pará, Brazilian authorities imposed production restrictions and embargoes in 2018. Brazil's Ministry of Environment said technical findings identified failures in wastewater handling and clandestine effluent discharge affecting water quality. Hydro later reported that combined investments, costs and fines connected with the Alunorte situation were estimated at BRL 319 million, including about BRL 33 million in fines that had been paid.
