In July 2019, Reckitt Benckiser Group plc agreed to pay $1.4 billion to resolve potential criminal and civil liability arising from a U.S. federal investigation into the marketing of the opioid-addiction treatment drug Suboxone. The U.S. Department of Justice said the resolution included $647 million in forfeiture, $700 million in civil settlements with federal and state governments, and a $50 million administrative resolution with the Federal Trade Commission. The government alleged that Reckitt's former pharmaceutical subsidiary promoted Suboxone to doctors who prescribed it for unsafe, ineffective or medically unnecessary uses, made false or misleading claims about diversion and abuse risks, and took steps designed to delay generic competition. Reckitt entered a non-prosecution agreement as part of the resolution.
