In December 2014, Sirius XM Radio agreed to pay $3.8 million to 45 states and the District of Columbia and provide restitution to eligible consumers to resolve consumer-protection claims involving its advertising, billing and cancellation practices. State attorneys general said their investigation focused on complaints that customers had difficulty cancelling contracts, cancellation requests were not honored, services renewed automatically without adequate notice or consent, unauthorized fees were charged, introductory rates were followed by unexpected higher prices and refunds were delayed. The settlement required Sirius XM to change its disclosures, automatic-renewal practices and cancellation procedures.
