Steel Dynamics Paid $475,000 and Agreed to $3 Million in Air-Pollution Controls
In March 2021, Steel Dynamics Inc. reached a settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency resolving alleged Clean Air Act violations at two steel facilities in Butler, Indiana. EPA alleged that Steel Dynamics failed to comply with requirements in its Title V operating permit. The company agreed to upgrade air-pollution control equipment at a cost of approximately $3 million and pay a $475,000 civil penalty split between the United States and Indiana. EPA said the upgrades would reduce particulate-matter emissions and improve protection of public health and the environment around the facilities.
