In October 2016, Tenet Healthcare Corporation and subsidiaries agreed to pay more than $513 million to resolve criminal charges and civil claims involving a scheme to defraud the United States and pay kickbacks for patient referrals. Two Tenet subsidiaries agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy to defraud the United States and to violate the Anti-Kickback Statute. The Justice Department alleged that hospitals paid bribes and kickbacks to operators of prenatal clinics serving primarily undocumented Hispanic women in exchange for referrals for labor and delivery services. Tenet also agreed to a civil False Claims Act settlement, compliance enhancements and an independent compliance monitor.
