German competition authorities found companies in the voestalpine group involved in anti-competitive agreements concerning rails and railway superstructure materials supplied to Deutsche Bahn. In July 2012 the German Federal Cartel Office imposed EUR 8.5 million in fines on voestalpine group companies. voestalpine cooperated extensively with the authority and received cooperating-witness treatment for much of the conduct. The German Federal Cartel Office concluded the private-market part of the rail cartel investigation in July 2013. The case concerned coordinated conduct in supplies of rails and railway equipment to private rail operators, industrial customers and construction companies. voestalpine was fined EUR 6.4 million. The company stated that the decision brought the German cartel-office proceedings in the rail-cartel matter fully and finally to an end.
