In January 2019, Walgreens Boots Alliance resolved two False Claims Act matters with the United States and state governments for a combined $269.2 million. In one settlement, Walgreens paid $209.2 million to resolve allegations that it improperly billed Medicare, Medicaid and other federal health programs for hundreds of thousands of insulin pens dispensed to beneficiaries who did not need them. In the second, Walgreens paid $60 million to resolve allegations that it overbilled Medicaid by failing to disclose lower drug prices available through a public discount program. The Justice Department stated that Walgreens admitted and accepted responsibility for conduct alleged by the government in both matters.
