In January 2017, Zimmer Biomet Holdings resolved U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act matters involving bribery and internal-control violations in Mexico and Brazil. The Justice Department said Zimmer Biomet agreed to pay a $17.4 million criminal penalty and that a subsidiary would plead guilty. The government said Biomet had breached a 2012 deferred prosecution agreement by continuing to use a prohibited distributor in Brazil and becoming involved in a new bribery scheme in Mexico.
