Zurich Insurance Subsidiaries Paid $5.115 Million in U.S. Tax-Evasion Resolution
In April 2019, Zurich Life Insurance Company Ltd. and Zurich International Life Limited, indirectly owned subsidiaries of Zurich Insurance Group, entered a non-prosecution agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice and agreed to pay a $5.115 million penalty. DOJ said that from 2008 through June 2014 the companies had approximately 420 U.S.-related policies with an aggregate maximum value of about $102 million for which customers had not provided evidence that the policies were declared to U.S. tax authorities. DOJ said the companies knew or should have known that certain customers were using policies to evade U.S. taxes or reporting requirements.
