888 Paid £7.8 Million After Gambling Commission Found Failures to Protect Vulnerable Customers
Company: 888 Holdings plc
Summary
In August 2017, the UK Gambling Commission imposed a penalty package of more than £7.8 million on 888 after finding serious failures in its treatment of vulnerable customers. A technical failure allowed more than 7,000 customers who had self-excluded from 888's casino, poker and sports platforms to continue accessing bingo accounts for more than 13 months. Those customers deposited approximately £3.5 million during the period. The Commission also found that 888 failed to adequately respond to visible signs of problem gambling by another customer who staked more than £1.3 million, including money stolen from an employer. The penalty package included repayment of deposits, compensation, payments toward tackling gambling-related harm and an independent audit of customer-protection processes.
