888 Paid £7.8 Million After Gambling Commission Found Failures to Protect Vulnerable Customers
In August 2017, the UK Gambling Commission imposed a penalty package of more than £7.8 million on 888 after finding serious failures in its treatment of vulnerable customers. A technical failure allowed more than 7,000 customers who had self-excluded from 888's casino, poker and sports platforms to continue accessing bingo accounts for more than 13 months. Those customers deposited approximately £3.5 million during the period. The Commission also found that 888 failed to adequately respond to visible signs of problem gambling by another customer who staked more than £1.3 million, including money stolen from an employer. The penalty package included repayment of deposits, compensation, payments toward tackling gambling-related harm and an independent audit of customer-protection processes. 888 Fined £9.4 Million for Social Responsibility and Anti-Money-Laundering Failures
In March 2022, the UK Gambling Commission fined 888 UK Limited £9.4 million after an investigation identified social-responsibility and anti-money-laundering failures. The regulator said the company failed to effectively identify and interact with customers at risk of gambling harm and had deficiencies in financial checks and anti-money-laundering controls. The Commission imposed an official warning and required extensive independent auditing. The regulator noted that this was the second major enforcement action against 888, following a £7.8 million penalty package in 2017 for failures involving vulnerable customers. The overall financial penalty was £9,409,756.48, including a penalty element and an amount intended to eliminate financial gain.
