Ashland Settled Multiple Environmental-Law Violations for More Than $32.5 Million
In October 1998, Ashland Inc. agreed to spend more than $32.5 million to settle federal allegations of illegal pollutant discharges and reporting violations at petroleum refineries in Kentucky, Minnesota and Ohio. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Justice described the case as involving extensive and recurring violations of federal pollution-control laws affecting air, water and soil. Ashland Paid $60,000 to Resolve Hazardous-Air-Pollutant Violations at Illinois Resin Plant
In August 2006, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reached an agreement with Ashland Inc. over alleged Clean Air Act violations at its resin manufacturing plant in Calumet City, Illinois. EPA alleged that Ashland failed to comply with national emissions standards for hazardous air pollutants and requirements in the facility's state operating permit. The agreement included a $60,000 penalty and an environmental project costing $154,400. Ashland agreed to install and maintain sealless pumps designed to prevent leaks of hazardous pollutants.
